What is a one-day writing workshop?
Other than the obvious—a writing workshop that lasts for one day—you’ll enjoy a range of writing exercises, prompts, and discussions that get to the heart of what you’re trying to say.
We’ll start with the fundamentals, with practical exercises that ensures that you’re covering the base. We’ll find characters, examine objectives, and define the conflict.
From there, we’ll explore some of the things we cover in our (currently) free Finding Starting Points short course to make sure you have a concept of the world you’re exploring and staying on track with a theme that drives the action.
One-day writing workshop: no prior experience needed
We’ve designed these one-day writing workshops to cater to all writers, regardless of their prior experience.
You could be a first-time playwright, a novelist wanting to try playwriting, or a seasoned professional playwright.
And our methods and exercises are suitable for novelists, looking to develop ideas for their next novel.
What will we cover in the one-day writing workshop?
There will some brief lecture content, but most of it will be practical and exercise-based. We’ll explore:
- The 4 Essentials of Playwriting—discovering characters, objectives, and a conflict that sets off the action.
- What you want to say—examining how to embed your theme
- The functions of dialogue and action—ensure your characters “do” things to each other rather than chat.
And there will be time to write and read your first few pages. Everyone will be encouraged to write quickly because this is a great way to discover what’s really on your mind.
Who is the tutor?
Mike Heath is a professional playwright, dramaturg, theatre director, and writing tutor. He has over 30 years of teaching experience and has taught adults at all levels—from Level 1 students, all the way through to degree.
Mike has written over 25 theatre plays, which have been performed extensively around the UK and beyond for the past 20 years.
He has helped countless playwrights develop their work, helping students from all over the world develop their ideas to create a play that’s performance-ready.
